v - - Quick Up-Do's - - v

From now on you can find some inspiration to quickly improve or refashion a garment right here!
This page will be updated every now and again so be sure to check back in sometimes. (star the page on top of your browser to quickly find us back next time:)

Up-do's and refashion's most often used ingredients: Trimming material/borders, cords, special tread or even wool, elastics, studs &buttons, mostly handstitching but also sewingmachine, peaces of jewelry and/or charms, leftovers, needle & thread.

Up-do Buttons!

More often then not, a garment just doesn't have the right buttons. (probably they always buy bulk and use same ones even if they should not)
So an easy up-do is to simply change the buttons! Buy/find some buttons that match the buttonhole (or smaller, you can always sew them closed a bit:) and most of all that actually match the outfit! Cut the tread loose from existing button (short scissors! don't ruin the garment!) Then remember the place and fist just attach your thread.  (see basic tips on this page) and then just go in and out of the button and end with a knot (on inside of garment). And that's it! You can also attach different buttons or hand paint some buttons to match:) Hope you will see the amazing improvements from this easy Up-do! And make it all your own:)

Tight to wide dress!

You can totally do this on the side instead of front and back, unless you want it to stand out more (like i did).
Have you ever bought a dress for a small price without trying it on? Or have you even gained a tiny belly and realized you would never wear this fitted dress like this? Both have happened to me! And i found multiple solutions!:) This is one of them: cut the sides or front open to the part where the widening should begin. Find a matching or contrasting fabric and cut it double into 2 triangles. Trim the edges and then either sew under, on top or inside the dress (inside meaning grab 'good side' from dress and fabric and hold against each other, sew both outsides together from the inside so no sewing line is seen from outside). And there you go! Now you can actually wear it! :D

Up-do Orange Jacket

I found this second hand jacket at the market for $4,- and was already impressed by it's uniqueness. I realized i had never seen an orange jacket before! Ever! So i had to get it. I spend days gathering the courage to combine it with fluor and metallic but then decided...i can always change it again! And went for it! Sorry i forgot to take a before picture, but here are some pictures to show the adjustments; I chose 2 sewing lines in the front and back to follow (sew again) with pink metallic thread. Then attached the scary fluorescent trimming on the collar of the jacket. Loved it! and decided the sleeves needed the leftovers. Then also made a metallic stitch on bottom of the sleeves and attached charms to the zippers with leftover flour thread. Done! (for now;)

Shapeless mess into dressed to impress;)

Have you even bought a dress but never wear it because it just doesnt flatter your figure at all?  (i have, too many times even..mostly when i love the fabric or color but also because i invision myself wearing it to a certain occasion (example white long dress at the beach) but then never wear it (example white gets dirty on the beach or could even shine through) for whatever reason? Gather you courage and think of it like this..anything is better then nothing right?

Ok, lets transform this boring shapeless thing into something that we could actually wear...:)
This one is going to become a pencilskirt with croptop so the first thing is to decide the length of skirt and top and tape (or pin, auch) where to cut it.

Skirt: trim de cut edges and make an elastic tunnel (be carefl not to sew the elastic to the fabric), at the end make the elastic as tight as you want and sew the ends together (even to/inside the fabric tunnel. Now you can still adjest the length, add lace or trimming at the borrom or even make a split by cutting from the bottom or the back or side and trimming the edges. :)

Top: In this case i have shortened the sleeves (you can ofcourse cut them of or make a sidesplit etc) And I actually like a high neckline with a croptop but can can ofcourse also cut a v line in there. In this case i made a v shape with some trimming (it is loose and hooks around the bottom button but can also be placed around the neck, or loose with a charm etc.). And this was another great example of outfits having totally the wrong buttons so i defenitly had to change them;) I also added some elastic on the bottom of the top so it would have a better fit, and attached the elastic on the outside for a more modern look.

v - - Handy Tips - - v

Instead of using pins (yes they hurt and scare me too) you can use safety pint to mark the fitting and painters tape to create the guidelines. It's easy to attach and dis-attach and in the end its even helpful to make in a ball and push on table to collect all the left over threads! :)

If you don't have or use a sewing machine, use double thread to make it even sturdier. Put the thread trough the needle and instead of making a knot pull it all the way down the the length you wanted. Tie the ends together and this way it's also an easy beginning! You make the fist stitch end on the way back go through the tied end and it's already fixed:)

If you hate trimming edges or don't use a sewing machine try to work as much as possible with the already trimmed lines of your leftovers or tea towels, handkerchiefs etc. If you do work with sewing machine but hate it anyway. try to already double fold the edges so you only have to sew them once;)
